Part (2/4) If you don’t love it, you will never be great at it. It’s simple, a hot novice will always outperform a cold expert.
I just dropped my two oldest kids off at college. As much as I will miss them both, it was amazing to see their drive and excitement for what was to come.
Too many of us are stuck in boring careers or monotonous lives because we’re too scared to take the risk of doing what we love. When did the joy of life we felt as 20 year olds get replaced with fear and boredom?
Getting passion and drive back is much easier than most people think. Passion is not something we can develop or create, it is created by what excites and stimulates us. And then when we are pumped about something, that passion creates the drive and motivation to succeed.
Successful people follow a simple process. They pursue their passion. Passion creates drive and fuels their hunger to succeed.
Richard Branson, founder of Virgin, is the perfect example. His passion for disruption and innovation has made him one of the most respected entrepreneurs in the world. Sure he’s a billionaire, but his passion to disrupt is what powers his success, not a billion dollars.
It’s easy to get passionate and excited in spurts, but how do you maintain your passion and drive? Here are a couple ideas:
Don’t compromise. Nelson Mandela said it best, “There’s no passion to be found in playing small – in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.” The more willing you are to live small, think small, and do small, the easier it will be to accept mediocrity and have a do-nothing-life.
Sweat the small stuff. You’ve probably heard the saying, “Much ado about nothing.” I am not saying to freak out about everything, However, big success comes from having a lot of small successes. Millions of dollars are made by earning a lot of pennies. Being so casual about everything and living a life free of care is not a way to live. Life must be lived, small victories must be pursued, passion must be felt, and that means caring about the small stuff because it is the foundation of big success.
Let go of your blasted fear. So what if you fail along the way? The facts are simple. Greatness comes from not being afraid to fail and then taking your lumps and learning from them. Nothing great comes easy but fear is conquered through action.
Find a superhero. Well, there is no such thing as a superhero, because the real heroes are ordinary people willing to overcome themselves by doing things others are too afraid to do. Find a hero (a mentor) that will inspire and motivate you. Someone that will tell you when you are messing up and celebrate your victories with you.
Surround yourself with passion. Nothing drains your success like hanging out with negative people. Eliminate the cynics and their negative comments from your life. Anyone who brings you down every time you are with them is going to prevent you from ever achieving greatness.
Summed up: If you are cold, find yourself some heat.
The fire within your belly comes from finding what motivates you and surrounding yourself with it everyday. Do not let anybody steal your passion. Become a person of greatness by living a lifelong pursuit of uncompromising excellence that fires your success.
