Small Stuff – [smawl stuhf] – Seemingly insignificant daily tasks that when done regularly and made a part of daily habits will result in Epicness.
The Epic Rules may appear to be trivial and too easy to really be important, but don’t let their inherent simplicity fool you, they will make or break you.
The most successful coach in college basketball history is John Wooden. Also nicknamed the “Wizard of Westwood,” Wooden won ten NCAA national championships in 12 years and his teams won a record 88 consecutive games. Wooden is the epitome of Epic. Wooden said, “The closest I can come to one secret of success is this: a lot of little things done well.”
Being Epic is not about ?doing 4000 things. It’s about doing the Epic Rules 4,000 times until you are their master. Being Epic requires that you have your small stuff together, that you are – heaven forbid – organized, systemic and focused.
Many people will tell you to “not major on the minors” and to “just keep your mind focused on your dream and you will figure out the rest”. The biggest difference between being Epic and just average is mastery of the basics. Those who are Epic understand that through the small stuff, great things happen.
David Blanchard, the CEO of The Og Mandino Group, has spent years testing and studying entrepreneurs and network marketers and their mental patterns. He found that 99.5% of all new people who are attracted to entrepreneur activities and network marketing are naturally resistant to discipline and structure. New entrepreneurs are often mavericks that have big ideas but can’t stand the structure of a 9 to 5 job. They believe that structure will hold them back and enslave their ideas.
Whatever fears you may have about structure and discipline, get over them quickly because systems, organization and discipline are your key to freedom and the independence to write your life story and become Epic. If you doubt what I am saying, take a look at the most successful people in the world and you will see that their companies have order and follow systems, they sweat the small stuff.
If you are not disciplined, get better dang it. Do as Og Mandino said, “I will form good habits and become their slaves.” Sweat the small stuff everyday, becoming Epic will require it.
